This English gown is based loosely on the gowns in Lucas de Heere's Group of English London Ladies, which dates from around 1570. As usual, everything is hand sewn. The outfit is made up of a smock and petticoat, over which I'm wearing a light-weight wool kirtle. There's a couple of pictures of that further down. The worsted sleeves are laced onto the kirtle, and the gown - also wool - is worn over that. The gown is made out of the skirt of last year's gentry gown. Making over clothes is a very period practice, and one which suits my current finances. Both kirtle and gown are lined with linen. The gown closes with hooks and eyes, and is entirely unboned. The kirtle laces at the sides and is stiffened with an applewood busk (carved by my father) and a few strips of reed at the side-front.
