The purpose of this section is to show you the very basics. I'm assuming that words like "shift" and "kirtle" or "doublet" and "hose" are pretty alien, and that you've never picked up a needle. If that's the case, the best place to start is by getting an idea of the layers you need to wear. The details of making the clothes will come later; first you need to figure out exactly what you're going to make.

  • What to wear: a guide to women's garments in the period.
  • What to wear: a guide to common male garments in the period.

Nearly as important as what you're making is getting a grasp on what you should be making it from.

  • Materials and colours: a guide to common fabrics and common colours in the sixteenth century, as well as a discussion of some twenty-first century suppliers.

Whatever you're making, how you sew doesn't much change.

  • Sewing techniques: a basic guide.
  • I'd planned to write quite extensively on Tudor seams and sewing techniques but I've been beaten to it. I do recommend you check out this guide, which is excellent. This link is off-site.
  • Finally, here is a basic guide to handsewing.Again, this is off-site.

Finally, here's some miscellaneous bits and bobs.

  • Fingerbraids: a period way to make cords and laces.
